Robert Fabian


 

Robert Fabian is an independent management and systems consultant based in Toronto. He has more than forty-five years experience developing efficient and effective ways for organizations to take business advantage of information technology. He has worked as a manager, consultant, and academic. Much of his recent work has focused on Best Practices and the professional's obligation to be trustworthy.

Bob has been a Principal with Hickling-Johnson, a national firm of management consultants, and a Partner with Gellman, Hayward, a Canadian management and systems consulting firm. He has held management positions with a Canadian vendor of networking and information services, with a major Canadian energy firm, and with York University and Seneca College in Toronto.

His work has ranged widely in many fields related to computing and communications. He has done technical work on software engineering, agent technologies, product engineering, database management systems, open systems, office automation, laser printing, electronic mail, and workflow coordination. He has done business and organizational work on assessment, strategic planning, quality of working life, business process reengineering, open organizations, change strategies, critical success factors, quality commitment, balanced scorecards, and quality standards. He developed long-term technology forecasts for the Canadian informatics and the Canadian telecommunications industries. He has done market research and market analysis for a number of different information technology products, in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Bob has followed Internet developments closely. He led the early Internet initiatives at a Toronto systems consulting firm; he has written widely on Internet topics; he has presented Internet material at the first four COMDEX/Canada Conferences. His work in the field has resulting in the use of Internet technology to: facilitate information sharing, automate forms processing, and define shared (electronic) trust within established communities. He has led web design, and redesign, efforts for a number of organizations.

Bob's consulting clients have included a wide range of private, public and not-for-profit organizations. He has provided consulting to firms in the informatics, education, retail, insurance, energy, publishing, banking, consulting, distribution, transportation, and manufacturing industries. He has done work for all levels of government, and for a broad range of not-for-profit organizations.

Bob's articles appear frequently in Canadian business publications and in a cross-section of trade publications. He has organized and presented a full range of conferences, seminars, and courses. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE. His 1965 Ph.D. in Mathematics (Computer Science) was awarded by Case Institute of Technology.
